HMS Gouger was old even by Royal Navy Standards. Built in the last year of the fifties, she was to slow for the fleet. Still with her long range endurance she had for years prowled the oceans to visit the more obscure smaller colonies of the fading Empire. Now she was going back, to her old hunting grounds of the South Atlantic the last of the "gun" diesels. A no hoper left over from the late sixties defence cuts as a training ship, and quietly forgotten by all. Inside her was left over technology from the second world war, in a shallow draft, and a slow speed, She was vulnerable. But in this 'can do Navy' she could be useful and therefore expendable in the first line of defence against the Exocet missile.
